T-Minus: 3, 2, 1…
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”
We Have Liftoff
This site, japhontech.com, the quiet brainchild of Jeremy Pickett, is going live. Not all at once. The site it is far from finished, however I firmly believe that incrementally rolling it out is A Good Thing.
We are starting with the Free Content. The blog. We will be releasing thoughts and blog entries during the business week, and occassionally on weekends. The blog is a place for ideas, discussions, and open brainstorming. But there are a few rules. They are up there in the main navigation, called Rules. Basically:
1) Be respectful. If it would be embarrassing to say to your grandparents, perhaps think twice.
2) Be constructive. Let’s build, not denigrate. Cybersecurity, IT, and so many jobs that we all do are difficult, so let’s make each other better.
3) Have a sense of humor. This does not mean that insults or derogatory language is tolerated. However, we are adults here. Please do not assume the worst intentions of someone or something immediately. Often words or ideas, “Do Not Land”, maintaining grace and civility is what makes us such a wonderful community.
What are you going to find?
Over the next two months, five major sections and projects are being rolled out.
The Blog
This is where thoughts on industry, news, and discussions of technology/ethics/morals will largely live. It is important that Cybersecurity has a rational, ethical lens, otherwise the jokes about, “How do two people keep a secret?”, or securing servers with concrete and very deep lakes just keep popping up. The application of philosophy to technology is vitally important, and keeping technology grounded with ethical and moral codes is critical.
Schedule: Business days, occasional weekends.
The Library
A key part of JaphOnTech is the Library. It is a living project, with content being created, curated, and collected in sections that largely conform with goals or duties of people. For example, regulations, and exactly how they apply to people such as Engineers, Analysts, Management/Leadership, Audit, Risk, and so on. This is a subscription service aimed towards in-the-weeds types, whether they are Individual Contributors or Leads who must understand at least the broad strokes of IC’s.
Schedule: Every other business day starting in September. Every business day starting in October.
Playbooks
Also sometimes called Runbooks or Workflows, these are downloadable artifacts used by Enterprise Security or governmental agencies to guide their security processes. They provide context, history, checklists, notes, and sensitive specific details relevant to many medium-large, regulated or audited businesses. While some entertainment value may exist for home users, ultimately they are designed for teams in complex Enterprise environments that require communication and interfacing with a variety of stakeholders with varied needs. This is a subscription service, and may be tailored to your needs.
Schedule: Launching in November, with several new Playbooks released per week. Market conditions, news worthy events, emerging threats will influence the order and specific release schedule.
Social Media
Find and interact with the community on X.com/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Videos and Podcasts are planned, along with eBooks and downloadable material. One of the core philosophies is the empower cybersecurity professionals, not hinder them. That drives our decisions on when and where to release, how to license or sell content, and how you may use or reuse the content from JaphOnTech. In broad terms, we here want to share in ways we would also like others to share. Which means a strong sense of community, commitment to Open Source and Fair Use, and reasonable discussions on what exactly that means. See ‘Licensing’ for the latest details, and do not hesitate to contact us with questions, comments, concerns.
Mixed Media
Video, audio, animation, tools, code, image, and the list goes on. We aim to be a force-multiplier for you and your environments, helping the community to use the tools they want to use, in the best ways possible for them. And to do that, community communication is key. So, look forward to a wealth of modalities so that all ships rise together.
